Artist's Comments

Visiting a local rural village I came across a granny looking after her two orphaned grandchildren. There was so much love, trust and happiness between them even under the very hard circumstances in which they lived. I entitled the painting Siyabonga Gogo - which translates to Thank you Granny.

This painting really touched me. Especially the emotion of the grandmother and how she's holding one of the children.

Thank you. I am sure they are ok - the Zulu culture in these rural villages is to care for each other - we westerners could learn so much from them. It was amazing to see how little they had, but how much love there was between them. There is another painting of this scene from a different angle on my gallery. It is called "but the greatest of these is love"

Thank you. Yes - these granny's are amazing at taking over the role of parenting where so many of the parents have died of aids. They are really remarkable people. Luckily in the Zulu culture especially in the rural areas the villagers really help each other out, especially in this sort of circumstance. There is another painting of this scene from a different angle on my gallery it's called, "but the greatest of these is love"

I see. We sure could. I'll check the other one out too.

Ah... I'll be sure to check that one out. I'm sure those kids are lucky to have someone so wise to lead them after the loss of their parents.
